After years of exclusion from the national budget, the Akosombo Dam spillage victims are finally receiving long-overdue relief as President John Dramani Mahama honors his commitment to support them. In the 2025 Budget, the government has allocated GH¢242.5 million to assist those affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage and GH¢200 million for victims of tidal waves along Ghana’s coastline.

The GH¢242.5 million earmarked for Akosombo Dam spillage victims will fund the resettlement of the remaining displaced residents, restore livelihoods, and facilitate the reconstruction of critical infrastructure. This initiative is aimed at providing sustainable relief to those who have endured significant hardships.

Additionally, GH¢200 million has been designated to support victims of the recent tidal wave disaster that displaced residents in Agavedzi and surrounding communities in the Ketu South constituency. Announcing this intervention, the Finance Minister Dr. Casiel Ato Forson stated:

“We have also allocated an amount of GH¢200 million to support the victims of the tidal wave disaster that recently displaced residents of Agavedzi and surrounding communities in the Ketu South constituency.”

These funds will be used to rebuild homes, strengthen coastal defenses, and implement economic recovery programs to stabilize affected communities.

President Mahama’s decision follows his recent visit to the affected areas, where he witnessed firsthand the extent of the devastation. During his visit, he reassured residents of swift government intervention to alleviate their hardships and introduced measures to prevent future occurrences.

This combined GH¢442.5 million commitment forms part of a broader national strategy to enhance disaster preparedness and resilience in Ghana’s coastal regions, ensuring its citizens’ long-term safety and well-being.
