President John Dramani Mahama inaugurated the newly constituted 31-member Council of State at the Jubilee House in Accra. The Council, established under Articles 89 to 92 of the 1992 Constitution, serves as an advisory body to the President on national issues.

The Council is chaired by Mr. Edward Korbly Doe Adjaho, a former Speaker of Parliament. Other notable members include former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo, former Inspector General of Police Mohammed Ahmed Alhassan, former Chief of Defence Staff Air Marshal Michael Samson-Oje (rtd), and Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, President of the National House of Chiefs.

The Council comprises 16 regional representatives elected from each of Ghana’s regions, alongside 11 presidential appointees.

In his address, President Mahama emphasized the Council’s critical role in providing non-partisan, insightful, and transformative guidance on governance, policy, and national development. He urged members to uphold principles of integrity, objectivity, and prioritize the national interest in their deliberations.

Chairman Doe Adjaho, speaking on behalf of the Council, pledged their commitment to support the President in addressing the nation’s challenges, including economic distress and social cohesion issues. He assured that the Council would function effectively, dispelling any public doubts about its relevance. The inauguration ceremony was attended by key government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and representatives from various sectors of society.
