In a significant move aimed at strengthening the legal profession in Ghana, the Attorney General has appointed Hon. Francis-Xavier Sosu and two other distinguished legal professionals to the General Legal Council (GLC). The appointment is expected to bring fresh perspectives to the council, which oversees the country’s legal education and professional conduct.

Hon. Sosu, the Member of Parliament for Madina and a renowned human rights lawyer, has been a vocal advocate for legal reforms in Ghana. His appointment comes at a time when discussions around improving legal education, streamlining the bar admission process, and enhancing justice delivery have been at the forefront of national discourse.

In response to his appointment, Hon. Sosu took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his gratitude to the President and the Attorney General, stating:

“I wish to thank the Learned Attorney General of the Republic of Ghana, Hon. Dr. Dominic Ayine, for nominating me to the General Legal Council. The General Legal Council, which regulates the legal profession in Ghana by overseeing legal education and professional practice of the law, plays a key role in effective and quality justice delivery. Set up in 1960 by The Legal Profession Act, 1960 (Act 32), the GLC needs serious progressive reforms. I am grateful to President John Dramani Mahama and the AG and humbly accept this nomination and promise to work with other Council members and relevant stakeholders to achieve the reset agenda of the President. Let’s work together to reform and reset legal education and practice in Ghana to guarantee justice for all and injustice to none.”

The two other appointees, Mrs. Clara Beeri Kasser-Tee (Lecturer at the University of Ghana School of Law) and Dr. Abdul-Bassil Aziz Bamba (Senior Lecturer, University of Ghana), are expected to bring their wealth of experience to the GLC to help in policy formulation and regulation of the legal profession.

Legal experts and stakeholders have welcomed the appointments, expressing hope that the new members will contribute meaningfully to ongoing efforts to improve legal education and ethics in Ghana.

The General Legal Council plays a crucial role in ensuring discipline and high standards within the legal profession. With these appointments, the government signals its commitment to addressing key challenges in the sector, including access to legal education and professional development. More details on the appointments and their implications for the legal profession are expected in the coming days.
