Dr. Yennusom Maalug, a seasoned Specialist Psychiatrist and public health advocate, has been appointed as the Acting Director of the Pantang Psychiatric Hospital, one of Ghana’s foremost mental health institutions.

With a robust background in psychiatry and public health, Dr. Maalug brings a wealth of experience to this new leadership role. He is a distinguished member of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (GCPS), where he is also currently pursuing a fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry. His academic journey includes a graduate degree from the School of Public Health at the University of Ghana, reinforcing his commitment to the intersection of mental health and public welfare.

Dr. Maalug holds multiple clinical roles across Accra’s leading healthcare institutions. He is the Psychiatrist-in-Charge at the Bank Hospital in Cantonments, and also serves as a Specialist Psychiatrist at both Pantang Hospital and EURACARE Multi-Specialist Hospital. In addition, he is the Medical Director of the Brain and Sleep Medical Center in Abokobi.

Beyond his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Maalug is a passionate educator. He lectures part-time at several institutions including the Accra College of Medicine, the Mental Health Department of the College of Health and Well-being in Kintampo, and Radford University College. He previously taught at the University for Development Studies (UDS) Medical School until 2020.

His leadership in the mental health field is evident through his service as the Vice President of the Psychiatric Association of Ghana (PAG), a role preceded by positions as Organizing Secretary of the PAG and Organizer of the National Association of Public Health Students, University of Ghana Chapter. He also served twice as Vice-President of the UDS Medical Students’ Association.

Dr. Maalug is the Chief Executive Officer of The Health Project, a community-driven health initiative founded by Hon. Francis-Xavier Sosu, Member of Parliament for Madina. The project delivers free medical outreach and essential equipment to underserved communities across Ghana. He also heads the Mental Health Institute, an NGO advocating for mental health education and access nationwide.

Outside his professional life, Dr. Maalug is an avid table tennis player, reader, football fan, and enjoys engaging in thoughtful political discussions. He is married and a proud father of two. Dr. Maalug’s appointment as Acting Director is widely seen as a strategic step toward revitalizing mental health services at Pantang Hospital and across the country.
