The Electoral Commission of Ghana has announced a halt in printing ballot papers for the upcoming December 7th election through an official statement, following the death of the Ghana Freedom Party’s presidential candidate, Madam Akua Donkor.
Madam Donkor fell ill early Monday at 4:00 a.m. and was taken to Nsawam Hospital, where she was reportedly diagnosed with respiratory issues. She was later transferred to Ridge Hospital, where she received intravenous treatment and a blood transfusion. Despite these efforts, she passed away at 10:00 p.m. Upon learning of her passing, the Electoral Commission decided to suspend printing to allow the Ghana Freedom Party a grace period to nominate a new candidate to replace Madam Akua Donkor in the upcoming election.
Madam Akua Donkor was a notable figure in Ghanaian politics, especially admired for her dedication to championing the rights of farmers and traders. She made her mark by fearlessly pursuing a vision for Ghana that resonated with rural communities and those whose voices often go unheard. As the founder of the Ghana Freedom Party, she brought attention to issues of agricultural development, economic fairness, and support for small-scale traders.
Her resilience, charisma, and humor made her a memorable personality. Though often considered unconventional in Ghana’s political arena, she held strong beliefs that endeared her to many, passionately advocating for the average Ghanaian.
She will be remembered in Ghana’s history for her steadfast support of farmers, traders, and many other causes she stood for.
