President John Dramani Mahama is set to visit Agavedzi and its environs today, March 6, 2025, to assess the extensive damage caused by recent tidal waves and to express solidarity with the affected residents. His visit underscores a sustained commitment to addressing the persistent challenges coastal communities face in the Volta Region.

The tidal waves, which struck on February 1, 2025, have had a devastating impact on several communities, including Agavedzi, Salakope, and Amutinu in the Ketu South Municipality. The disaster has led to the displacement of more than 300 individuals from several households in Agavedzi and its other communities.

Many displaced residents have sought refuge with relatives in neighboring areas, while distressing reports indicate that flooding has exhumed bodies from local cemeteries, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

In response to the disaster, the Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, recently visited the affected communities, assuring residents of the government’s unwavering commitment to preventing further loss of life. He emphasized the urgency of implementing immediate relief efforts while working toward long-term interventions to mitigate the recurring tidal wave menace.

During his visit, President Mahama is expected to engage with local leaders and affected residents to gain deeper insights into their plight and explore viable solutions for sustainable coastal protection. His presence is anticipated to further highlight the pressing need for enhanced coastal resilience strategies.

Meanwhile, affected communities continue to appeal to the government to expedite the completion of the second phase of the Blekusu Sea Defence Project, which is expected to provide a lasting safeguard against the destructive impact of tidal waves along Ghana’s coastline.
